In the seminar we will study the techniques of the instrument as they arise through its role in the various musical idioms of Crete. This year we will focus on urban songs, which we also find under other names (tabahaniotika, creticorebetika, tunes, etc.). At the same time we will work on the coexistence of many instruments in order to function as a musical ensemble. The seminar is of a workshop nature and is open to all interested people, regardless of their level. It is also open to other musical instruments interested in this repertoire.

BIOGRAPHY

Karolos Kouklakis was born and raised in Athens. His involvement with music began at the age of 14, when, self-taught, he started with popular music and then traditional instruments (Lute-Mandolin and Bulgari) of the Greek area.

At the same time, he began studying Byzantine music theory with Vasilis Nonis and later with Ioannis Arvanitis. Since 1988, he has collaborated with very significant musicians and composers such as Chronis Aidonidis, Domna Samiou, Vangelis Papathanasiou (Opening ceremony of the World Athletics Championships in 1997), Nikos Papaioannou - George Koumentakis (Closing ceremony of the Athens 2004 Olympic Games), Nikos Mamangakis, Yiannis Markopoulos, Christos Leontis, Kyriakos Kalaitzidis (Enhorde), etc., participating in concerts or recordings.

In 1993, he created together with Zacharias Spiridakis and Eirini Derempei the music group "Palaia Sefaria", with which they signed two recordings. Since 2008, in collaboration with Eirini Derempei, they have been traveling the music of Crete with wind instruments and Bulgari in concerts both in Greece and abroad. The result of this collaboration is the CD titled "Wherever you are, Hello!"

From the academic year 1989-1990 until today, he has been a teacher of tambourine, Bulgari, politiko, and Cretan lute at the Experimental Music School of Pallini.
