At this year's gathering, we will study the "urban" songs of Crete. Distinct and particularly elaborate melodic forms, some original and others influenced by Anatolian, island, or even Eastern patterns with a clear reference to Byzantine as well as Eastern music, which constitute a separate chapter of the island's music.
RESUME
Irini Derebei was born and raised in Athens, where she studied advanced theory and monody under the tutelage of Marina Krilovic. She graduated from the Athens Conservatory, from the class of Meni Charalambidou, obtaining a diploma in monody, with honors. She is also a graduate of Pallini Music School.
She has studied traditional, Byzantine and Western music and plays tambourine, traditional wind instruments and lavta. Her musical character was shaped by a variety of musical hearings, fueling the cultivation of a personal sound and special technique, in which she incorporated different musical idioms.
She debuted in the discography young, collaborating with the Greek Music Archive and Chronis Aidonidis. In 1993, together with Karolos Kouklakis and Zacharias Spyridakis, they founded the musical group "Paleina Seferia", with which they made two records and concerts in Greece and abroad. He participated in numerous record productions, while he has collaborated with important traditional musicians and composers in Greece and abroad such as Chronis Aidonidis, Ross Daly, Nikos Mamagakis, Vangelis Papathanasiou, Christos Leontis, Yiannis Markopoulos, Nikos Xydakis, Giorgos Koumentakis, Kyriakos Kalaitzidis (En Chordais ), Haig Yazdjian, George Tsodakis, Jordi Saval and more.
She is a member of the vocal quartet "Jasemi", while since 2008 he has been collaborating with Karolos Kouklakis, re-approaching the music of Crete with a new perspective, performing concerts in Greece and abroad. The result of this collaboration is the record work entitled "Wherever you are, ya sou!!!"
In 1993 she won the performance award at the 2nd "Kosta Moutakis" Cretan Music Festival. On the internet there are posted excerpts of concerts with her participation.
From the school year 1999-2000 until today, she has been teaching tambourine and traditional wind instruments at the Experimental Music School of Pallini, while since the academic year 2018 she has been teaching traditional singing as part of the Master's program of the Department of Music Studies of the EKPA.
